HFES 2020 Virtual Conference Recap: Applying the Science of Behavior Change to Medical Device Design

Applying the Science of Behavior Change to Medical Device Design

Medical device designers, manufacturers, and healthcare professionals all grapple with how to positively influence end user or patient behavior to increase adherence to drug delivery and other medical therapies.

To explore ways in which to improve patient adherence, check out Applying the Science of Behavior Change to Medical Device Design, which we presented at this year’s International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care (Virtual Conference).

In this presentation, we review the central theories of behavior change and the science of decision-making, then provide applied examples of research and design principles that can facilitate user compliance, adherence, and goal completion. By understanding the holistic set of factors that shape human behavior, we can help to improve patient compliance, which ultimately leads to better patient outcomes.
