Farm Sponsored FIRST Team: Bringing Engineering Opportunities to Title I Schools

FIRST Robotics Gearheadz Team

The Farm sponsored FIRST Robotics Team 1289, the Gearheadz, of Lawrence, Massachusetts were recently featured in a FIRST case study titled, Bringing Engineering Opportunities to Title I Schools. With the support of local team sponsors and a group of dedicated mentors, Lawrence high school started the FIRST Robotics team back in 2004. Each year, a diverse group of up to 60 students join to gain confidence, leadership skills, and hands-on engineering experience.

Student Miguel De Jesus joined the team as a shy freshman, but with the encouragement of mentors, he came out of his shell to become a confident public speaker and the team’s president. Miguel plans to join the military after graduating Lawrence. “I don’t really know where I would be if it weren’t for what robotics has taught me when it comes to communications, sportsmanship, and technology,” he said.

Farm is proud to support the Lawrence Gearheadz FIRST Robotics Team, and it hopes teams present and future can help reluctant students graduate, excel in math and science, and discover engineering.
