On Your Best Behavior: Applying the Science of Behavior Change to Medical Device Design

MDD6Evangelizing human factors in medical device design

Medical device designers, manufacturers, and healthcare professionals all grapple with how to influence end user or patient behavior to deliver medical devices and therapies that are safe and effective. In this presentation, Laurie Reed, Senior Director of Human Factors Engineering, and Kate MacNamee, Senior Human Factors Engineer, will review the central theories of behavior change and provide applied examples of design principals that can facilitate user compliance, adherence, and goal completion. By understanding and working with the holistic set of factors that shape human behavior, we can improve medical device design.

Considerations for Study Design: A Tool-Kit for Designing for Impaired Users

Poster Presentations, Medical and Drug-Delivery Devices Track 1

Teresita Liebel, Human Factors Engineer, will present a poster that emphasizes the importance of recruiting and testing with true representative end users. For some products and devices, this consists of users with impairments. The poster details how users' impairments affect usability study recruiting and usability tests themselves. By understanding the importance of including these impaired user groups and finding representative users, products can be designed inclusively for all.
