Industrial Design Internship

Farm is looking for an industrial design intern to join our product development group. As a Design Intern at Farm, you will develop meaningful user experiences for a wide array of products and systems through aspects of discovery, analysis, and envisioning. You’ll work in the field to better understand users, collaborate as a team to frame the problem, and help develop solutions that shape the future of healthcare.

Here is a glimpse of what you’ll do…
  • Participate in the conceptualization of products and physical interfaces having an appropriate level of sophistication, complexity, and/or breadth of scope for his/her skill level.
  • Show a developing awareness of the overall product and its primary function as it relates to the user(s) and “system” in which it lives. Acquire knowledge through client inputs and formative research to inform the design process.
  • Possess some knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques and applies design for manufacturing and assembly principles as needed.
  • Create necessary documentation to convey the design solution to design leads and management through sketches, renderings, handcrafted models, CAD and prototypes.
  • As applicable, design user interfaces, icons, packaging and graphics.
  • Engage with vendors for prototyping and gathering of DFx feedback.
  • Work with user research and mechanical engineering to implement a design that meets end-user needs and marketing requirements while applying a high value to functionality and manufacturability.
  • Interact with the research, engineering, operations, business development, and quality disciplines.
  • Provide verbal and written presentations to other team members that effectively communicate the value of his/her designs.
  • Develop an understanding of your capabilities and work commitments and be able to provide estimates/schedule for work deliverables, which may require management oversight.
Here is some of what you’ll need (required)...
  • Jr/Sr student currently enrolled in accredited school studying industrial design or product design.
  • 3.0 minimum GPA.
  • Ability to work 10-12 weeks during the Summer term
  • Sufficient maturity to interact with project teams in a cooperative and productive manner with medium supervision.
  • Demonstrated versatility and competency levels in creativity and technical comprehension.
  • Experience using Industrial Design CAD tools to resolve Industrial Design challenges and to produce quality renderings, graphics and CAD databases; proficient in Windows operating system and other Industrial Design software.
  • Developed interpersonal and communication skills.
Here are a few of our preferred experiences…
  • Fluency in 3D surfacing is welcome, but not required.
  • Model-making skills are a plus (foam core, foam, rapid prototyping, etc.).
