Farm’s Director of Research & Usability, Laurie Reed, is scheduled to lead a panel discussion at the upcoming IDSA Medical Design Conference taking place at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in Tampa, FL.

The panel discussion, titled The IRB Mêlée, will focus on current practices for seeking IRB approval for various types of research, including generative research, preference testing and formative and summative usability testing. Audience members can expect to learn some of the different approaches for obtaining IRB approval as well as the situations in which IRB oversight is considered a requirement. Additional topics will include the increasing difficulty of obtaining permission to enter hospitals to conduct research, and the bureaucratic obstacles that researchers face when planning such projects.

Farm’s Senior Usability Specialist, Linda Pellegrino, and Senior Human Factors Engineer, Laurie Reed, will present “Medical Simulation Centers: Selection and Tips from the Field”

Farm has been invited to present at the 2013 International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care: Advancing the Cause. To be held March 10-13 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland, the symposium provides practical and actionable methods, guidelines, and best practices to enable participants to advance HF/E approaches and outcomes in their respective work settings.

Farm’s Senior Usability Specialist, Linda Pellegrino, and Senior Human Factors Engineer, Laurie Reed, will present “Medical Simulation Centers: Selection and Tips from the Field” during the Medical Device Design track on Tuesday, March 12, 1:30-3:30. The presentation will cover when to use simulation centers, advantages and disadvantages of conducting usability testing in this setting, and lessons learned from the field. In addition, Farm’s Director of Research and Usability, Beth Loring, will present “Time Tracker: Tool to Visualize and Explore Surgical Procedures” on March 12 from 4:45-6:00. This presentation will introduce a graphical tool Farm has developed called the “time tracker,” which is used to visualize and analyze procedural data after research. The time tracker helps conduct task analyses, compare approaches and philosophies across surgeons, identify repeated steps and back-tracking, and uncover unmet needs and opportunities.

Farm to Speak at Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, October 24 at 3:00pm

Beth Loring, Director of Research & Usability at Farm, will be speaking to aspiring human factors professionals in the Student Lounge at the upcoming Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting in Boston. The Student Lounge provides a fun atmosphere for students to meet peers and obtain career advice from industry leaders. Daily speakers from both industry and academia will be presenting on various topics to provide students with insight on beginning their careers and what to expect from the human factors profession in the years to come.

Beth's topic is titled "Usability Engineering in Medical Product Development." She will discuss FDA and CE regulations, describe Farm's human factors / usability engineering process, and share a case study of a successful application of usability engineering in the development of laparoscopic instruments.

On October 5, 2011, Farm’s director of research and usability, Beth Loring, will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark, to participate in a seminar titled “Use Only the Users and Create Useful Products,” sponsored by Force Technology.

The seminar will feature leading companies and experts discussing experiences with user involvement. Beth Loring will present “Usability in Medical Product Development” and discuss how user perspectives in the U.S. permeate medical device development and are required for FDA approval.
